“Sustainable development towards a future where every human being can unfold his individual potential; where mankind lives together in social forms reflecting human dignity; and where all economic activity is conducted in accordance with ecological and ethical principle.”
In 1977, Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish started the SEKEM Initiative on an untouched part of the Egyptian desert 60 km northeast of Cairo. Using Biodynamic agricultural methods, desert land was revitalized and a striving agricultural business developed. Over the years, SEKEM became the umbrella of a multifaceted agro-industrial group of companies and NGOs, including different educational institutions and a Medical Center. Today, SEKEM is regarded as a leading social business worldwide.
In 2003, SEKEM received the prestigious “Right Livelhood Award”, better known as Alternative Nobel Prize.
SEKEM promotes a closed value chain – the initiative cooperates with around 500 small farmers throughout Egypt, who all work according to Organic principles.
SEKEM runs several companies under the ethics of an Economy of Love. Employees work under fair condictions and are supported in their individual needs and devlopment.
With parts of their profits, SEKEM companies finance educational institutions such as schools, vocational training and a university. They are supporting young people in finding their talents and encourag them to become the creators of a better future.

SEKEM is greening further desert soils in the Western Egyptian Desert. By recultivating the inhospitable land through sustainable agriculture climate change is combated. People find work, healthy food and a community where they can work, live and unfold their potential.
New life is emerging in the remote western desert of Egypt. We want to unfold the children’s potential and empower them to shape their future. Empowering our children means to empower the future! Only through people we can realize a sustainable transition.
